Many users have tried Outlook 98, only to later uninstall it.  However, after uninstalling Outlook, they can no longer access their old Windows Address Book -- every time that they click on the WAB, they get an Outlook Contacts dialogue window.   This is a known bug in the OE to O98 interface that the MOE Team is working to resolve.  In the meantime, go to Tools | Options and disable Data Sharing, which should help.
Many users have reported that enabling "Automatically put people I reply to in my Address Book" under Tools | Options | General doesn't appear to work. This is a known bug, but it's one of the intermittent types.  Several features in OE seem to be reluctant to become activated, like the sound assignment for notification and fonts.   This "Automatically add to WAB" feature falls in a similar category  To try and get this to work, you might try closing OE and then restarting it.  If that doesn't work, try rebooting your computer.  Unfortunately, sometimes, it doesn't work at all.
Assume that you have several email addresses in your WAB for a particular recipient. Inside the WAB, you have to select one of these addresses as the default address. If you try to resolve the address by clicking on CTRL + K, it will not be resolved to the name you assigned to that address in the WAB. There are a couple of work arounds that will deal with this problem. One method is to set the email address to which you want to send the message as the "default" for a moment. After you have sent the message to that address, you can then switch the address in your WAB back to the standard default address. To be honest, this one is a bit tedious. However, it also doesn't clutter your WAB with a bunch of additional entries. Another method is to set up separate WAB entries for a contact that has multiple addresses. For example, if Janice has two email addresses, janice@email1.com and janice@email2.com, there would be two separate entries for Janice in your WAB. Now, whether you set up OE to auto complete addresses or if you prefer to type in a partial address and use CTRL + K to engage in a quick search, when you click on Send, both of Janice's email addresses will pop up. This second method works quite nicely, but it also clutters your WAB with a bunch of additional entries. As a result, your best bet is to leave one entry in your WAB that ,lists all email addresses for a particular contact and that has specified a default address. Then, so that you can purge extra entries later when multiple address functionality is added to OE, add separate entries only for the non-default email addresses. The MOE Team is aware of this issue. For more information, read
close your WAB while you are in the process of composing a message that you started by using the WAB Send Mail tool. To work around this behavior, be sure to click on the 'x' in the upper right corner of the Compose Message window of a message that you are in the process of composing before closing your WAB.
WAB Export to CSV Flaw
The WAB allows you to store multiple email addresses for one contact, though only one of those addresses can be set as the default address that OE will use. If you use the WAB export tool and select the comma separated value (or "CSV") format, when you export your WAB data, only the default email address is actually exported. All other email addresses for the same contact are lost (which can be a real problem). The MOE Team is aware of this issue.

The first sub-key "Synchronization" keeps track of the last synchronization between the WAB and a Hotmail address book on the Hotmail server. You will see a sub-key for each Hotmail account in the current Identity whose address book has been synchronized. The "WAB Sort State" stores the sorting order you have established in the WAB. The WAB4\LastFind sub-key stores the history for the Find People function.
The final key, "WAB4\Wab File Name", deserves special attention, as this is where OE stores the path and file name for the *.wab file being used. You can change the location of the WAB only by editing the path stored here. (see also

If you uninstall OE5.01 or OE5.5 and then reinstall Win98, your WAB will be inaccessible. Upgrading to at least version 5.01 will allow you to access the WAB again. I recommend that you create an emergency backup of the Address Book as well. Open the Address Book by double-clicking the *.wab file. Click File| Export| Other Address Book, then click on Text File (Comma Separated Values). Click the Export button, specify a destination folder, and click Next. Select all the fields shown for a complete backup, then click Finish. The resulting *.csv file can later be imported using File| Import| Other Address Book| Text File (Comma Separated Values).
Note: If you do not see a path to a *.wab, then you have set OE to share the Contacts folder in Outlook98 or Outlook2000, and you should consult the Outlook Help file for instructions on backing up your entire Outlook *.pst file.

After installing an OE update, you may discover a file named just "~" on your desktop or some other location on your hard drive. This is an automatic backup copy of the Windows Address Book (WAB) used by OE. The file has always been created automatically by OE and saved in the same folder as the *.wab file itself, with a name like .wa~. A bug in an update causes the copy to be made in the wrong location and with a truncated name. You can simply rename it to *.wab and then double-click it to see that it is indeed a copy of your address book.
This bug is Fixed in Windows XP Service Pack 2. After installing SP2, the backup file has the extension ".wab~".

You can also create shortcuts pre-addressed to friends, family or even groups. To save a shortcut to a Group, open a new message in Outlook Express, put the Group in the To: field, and then File| Save As to save it to the Messaging folder. For pre-addressing messages with the default stationery, it's easier to use a mailto: shortcut, by simply adding the email address: mailto:somebody@some.where. If you have assigned a unique Nickname in the Windows Address Book (WAB), you can also use it in the shortcut (mailto:coolcat). You can assign each shortcut its own distinctive icon (right-click the shortcut, Properties, Change Icon). You could even use a scanned photo of the person as an icon (create it as .bmp, then rename it to .ico).
If you use multiple Address Books (WAB's), Browse to the folder you want to hold all of your WAB's (like D:\Address Books). You can drag and drop names between open WAB's. I keep two extra WAB's, one named Work and one named Personal. I suggest you keep all your WAB's in a separate Address Books folder. Then you can drag shortcuts to them (and to the default WAB) into your Messaging folder, and assign each WAB shortcut a distinctive icon. (for more on multiple WAB's, see below)

Just because you change email programs doesn't mean you lose all your email addresses. You can import address book contacts from other email software and other Windows Address Book files (.WAB).

When you change the Address Book, what should happen is that a backup called YOURNAME.WA~ would be created in the directory C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book. This is a backup to the Address Book named YOURNAME.WAB in that same directory. With the update installed, however, the backup does not get installed into the correct directory and the name gets shortened to just the ending tilde (~) character. This file appears on your Desktop instead of where it should appear.
If you're not certain, rename the file to TEST.WAB and move it to the indicated directory above. Then double click it and see if the Address Book applet in Windows starts and shows your address book.

How can I restore windows address book.  I have Windows ME and I use Outlook 2000.  I was trying to add space on my drive since it is low and deleted the Windows Address Book, which was a very stupid error.  I did not know that it would effect the operation of my Outlook 2000.  Now I am not receiving any emails which I have filtered from my email accounts nor can I send any emails.  I am getting the error message "wab.dll not found" or t"he operation failed".
You can also reinstall outlook express to get your address book working.  However if you have deleted the WAB file previously you would not have all your contact information but the address book would start working and you can put data
When do you get wab.dll not found error message ?
When do you get wab.dll not found error message ?
Try going to start, run, and type:      wab /new        then hit enter and test outlook.
and clicked on the outlook.pst file, I now get that error message when trying to open Outlook 2000.  By the way, I wasn't successful saving my .pst files since I only have diskettes and they won't fit.  I need to get some CD's.  Anyway, I went into the Microsoft Office website and typed the error messages for OE (256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry).  It gives steps to manually uninstall Outlook Express from Windows ME.  It also says to rename the Outlook Express registry keys and rename OE files and then reinstall OE.  It also warns that if not used correctly that I could mess up my entire Operating System.  So I am reluctant to actually go to the steps.  Besides something in Part 3 of their instructions is not there.  When they say to go into the windows Setup of Add/Remove under components to clear the check next to Outlook Express.  Well there is no selection for Outlook Express in the Windows Setup tab under Components on my computer.  There are other options there, including Address Book, but not OE.  I was wondering since I deleted the WAB why does it show up with 1.8 MB next to it.  I deleted it?  Sunray, this is really a mess that I have not being able to use the Outlook 2000 or the OE.  I can, of course, go into my individual ISP accounts to get my emails.  I have Optimum Online and Compuserve, so my emails are not lost.  I can still send & receive through those ISP's once I log on to each one.  You know how convenient it is using Outlook 2000 or even OE, which I never use.  I've used Outlook  on my job for years and I am so used to it.  Now on my home computer, I may never have that option again.  By the way a few days ago I downloaded the IE Service Pack #1 and ever since that download I cannot open Outlook 2000.  I don't know if this helps but all of the following softwares are installed when I view Add/Remove Programs:
